Our RHS Aspen (Populus tremula) cell grown plants are extracted from their cells prior to despatch and are wrapped in protective packaging to ensure the root plug stays moist. The plants come with their root systems intact, whereas bare root plants can lose the fine feeding roots and root hairs when they are lifted. This means that cell grown plants can become more quickly established than bare root. Another advantage of cell grown Aspen is that it can be planted into warm soils when roots are active, outside the dormant period. As long as the roots are kept moist, cell grown plants can be planted throughout the year.Our RHS Populus tremula is a mediumsized deciduous hedge growing to 1025 m tall with a trunk up to 1 m diameter. The bark is pale greenishgrey and smooth on young trees with dark grey diamondshaped lenticels becoming dark grey and fissured on older trees. The leaves on seedlings and fastgrowing stems of root sprouts are very different heartshaped to nearly triangular and often much larger up to 20 cm long. Adult leaves produced on branches of mature trees are nearly round slightly wider than long 28 cm diameter with a coarsely toothed margin and a laterally flattened petiole 48 cm long.
