The Hozelock 1820 Pond Air Pump is ideal for oxygenating large fish and koi ponds. It is a high performance reliable quiet running air pump with a weatherproof aluminium case to allow the pump to be safely left uncovered outdoors to simplify installation. A 10cm air stone is included which allows maximum diffusion of air into the water and avoids the need for multiple air stones making installation easier. If necessary an additional 11 air stones can be added to provide oxygen to different areas of the pond.

Adding oxygen to a fish pond is very important for fish health particularly in summer months when the heat causes oxygen levels to decline. If your fish spend a lot of time at the surface sometimes gulping air or you have noxious odours coming from your pond then you most likely do not have enough circulation. A pond not only needs to absorb oxygen from the air but it also needs to release carbon dioxide and maybe hydrogen sulfide among other gases. Hydrogen sulfide is produced by anaerobic (without oxygen) bacteria breaking down organic matter in the bottom of the pond. The pond bottom has less oxygen than the upper layers of the pond especially if you have stone or gravel in the bottom of your pond. Anaerobic bacteria work in the absence of oxygen and cause a septic condition in the bottom of the pond.
