Preferred common name: Purple Beech Other common names: Copper Beech Our Royal Horticultural Society Purple Beech ( Fagus sylvatica Atropurpurea ) is a large and fastgrowing deciduous native plant with a broad spreading crown; elliptic, yellowgreen leaves in spring, turning rich russetbrown in autumn; and small, green flowers, followed by bristly fruits The pinkpurple foliage darkens to a rich copper in summer before turning golden brown in autumn. Beech is grown for its superb foliage of delicate fluttery leaves with wavy edges. It has simple beautiful green leaves, which shine with life in spring and turn a beautiful bronze and yellow color in the autumn. It likes sun or partial shade and does well on almost any well drained soil (acid or alkaline). Trimming the hedge during towards the end of summer helps retain its leaves throughout winter. The hedge retains copper foliage throughout the winter before the delight of its fresh new growth each spring. Bare root hedging is a very low cost way of planting a hedge, but is only available to buy and plant when dormant (NovemberMarch).
