Dry Shade Border

This is perhaps one of the most taxing environments for the average gardener. Ever changing and often in a state of drought there are only a select few plants that can tolerate such conditions. But never despair!!! Take inspiration from our native woodlands. What could be more glorious than a bluebell wood in spring or a dappled woodland glade in the height of summer?

Closer examination of your shady spot may reveal chinks of sunlight at certain times of day, ideal sites to sneak in a few flowering perennials.

Evergreen shrubs with rich dark green foliage are the ones that do best in the shade.

Nature also provides a wonderful array of perennials that are also suitable. The evocative woodland foxglove on mass is a stunning site to see but translates well on a smaller scale within the garden. Delicately flowered carpets of Tiarella and Epimedium sparkle like tiny stars in the shade while the nodding heads of Anemone and Bergenia’s provide a striking contrast.

White is a colour that glistens in the shade and this selection of plants can be put together using only white flowers, a timeless design, pure simple and elegant!!

For a more natural look why not select a few pink Foxgloves, Geraniums and Bergenias to add a little touch of colour to the boarder.
