Hazel (Corylus avellana) is fast growing species of hazel native to Europe. Common Hazel is a shrub common in many European woodlands and is also an important component of the hedgerows that were the traditional field boundaries in lowland England. Hazel can also grow into a wonderful medium sized tree exhibiting large mid green leaves. Come spring the tree is covered in a mass of long yellow catkins followed by edible nuts in autumn which are rich in protein and unsaturated fat.
