This deciduous, upright tree has a distinctive, flamelike outline which grows wider with age. Leaves are oval and dark green, turning yellow and orange when in autumn. Fastigiate Hornbeam is excellent as a specimen tree with its ovate, serrate, ribbed leaves. This Deciduous medium sized tree has an erect pyramidal habit, which can be planted in any reasonable soil. Hornbeam retains brown foliage in winter, especially if pruned in late summer. This makes it an excellent windbreak and screen. So much so that it used to be used in mazes.
