Purple carrots are not new... in fact it is the orange carrot that is the new-comer! About 300 years ago it was the Dutch who first selected and planted the carrot in patriotic orange the Dutch national colour - so the orange carrots are seventeenth century 'designer' carrots! Before that carrots were purple red white green yellow or black.

This variety has spectacular long tapering smooth skinned roots of intense purple skin colour contrasting with the orange centres. Just wash and slice for salads and snacking; best eaten raw as very rich in antioxidants or steamed to retain the colour.

Sow April to July at 4 week interval. This plant prefers well-drained moist rich cool conditions harvest July to November later sowings can be lifted and stored.

Sow thinly 1cm (1/2in) deep in drills 30cm (12in) apart. Thin seedlings to 5cm (2in) apart when large enough to handle to reduce risk of carrot root flay attack. Keep well watered for best quality roots.

Chunks of the sweet flesh are delicious in salads or used as dippers with cream cheese.
