The Downy Birch has a distinctive brownish grey bark that turns grey white as the tree ages however rather than splintering and splitting as it grows older it remains smooth right down to the base of the tree. Its upright branches produce broad blunt tipped triangular shaped leaves initially green before turning a shade of golden yellow. This deciduous tree displays wild wind pollinated catkins grey in winter and yellow in spring. The Downy Birch gets its name from the downy hairs found on the leaf stalks and shoots. This Birch is a hardy specimen that grows abundantly in poor or wet soils preferably acidic.
