Preferred common name: Horse chestnut, conker The RHS Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is a large deciduous tree, commonly known as Horsechestnut or Conker tree. The flowers are usually white with a small red spot; they are produced in spring in erect panicles 1030 cm tall with about 2050 flowers on each panicle. Usually only 15 fruit develop on each panicle; the fruit is a green, softly spiky capsule containing one (rarely two or three) nutlike seeds called conkers or horsechestnuts. Each conker is 24 cm diameter, glossy nutbrown with a whitish scar at the base.Bare root hedging is a very low cost way of planting a hedge, but is only available to buy and plant when dormant (NovemberMarch).
