Preferred common name: Red Oak Other common names: Northern Red Oak Our Royal Horticultural Society Red Oak ( Quercus rubra ) also known as Northern Red Oak, grows straight and tall, to 35 m (115 ft), exceptionally to 43 m (140 ft) tall, with a trunk of up to 1 m (3 ft) diameter. It grows rapidly and is tolerant of many soils and varied situations, although it prefers welldrained soils. Leaves are alternate, seven to ninelobed, oblongovate to oblong, five to ten inches long, four to six inches broad; seven to eleven lobes turning rad in autumn. Acorns ripen in the spring of the second year.
