The Sarracenia purpurea Venosa is commonly known as the American Pitcher Plant or Southern Huntsman s Cap and is a dwarf, clump forming fly catcher. They produce red flowers in spring. The flowers are followed by red pitchers which can grow between 1518 cms high (68 inches). It is fully hardy and can be planted outside in the garden or inside a greenhouse or on a window sill. One important consideration is that Sarracenia s do not respond well to tap water, so it is recommended to use rain water.
