Preferred common name: Sessile Oak Other common names: Welsh oak, durmast oak Our Royal Horticultural Society Sessile Oak ( Quercus petraea ), also known as Welsh Oak or Durmast Oak, is a species of oak native to most of Europe. Sessile Oak has been designated the national tree of Wales, where it is also called Welsh Oak. Sessile Oak hedge is up to 2040 m tall. The leaves are 714 cm long and 48 cm broad, evenly lobed with five to six lobes on each side, and a 1 cm petiole. The flowers are catkins, produced in the spring. The fruit is an acorn 23 cm long and 12 cm broad, which matures in about 6 months. It is found more often than the Common Oak in upland areas with higher rainfall, but also with lighter soils with better drainage. Unlike Common Oak the acorns are stalkless.
