Common Name: Spindle Our Royal Horticultural Society Spindle ( Euonymus Europaeus ) is a vigorous nativegreen stemmed deciduous hedge with dark green, spoonshaped leaves. The leaves are opposite and are lanceolate to elliptical, 3 to 8cm long and 13cm broad, with a finely serrated edge. In autumn they are often show a beautiful bright red colour. The small, hermaphrodite and inconspicuous yellowgreen flowers are produced in late spring and grow in cymes of 38 together. Followed by capsular fruits ripening in autumn. They are red to pink or pink in colour and approximately 1 to 1.5cm wide. When they ripen, the four lobes split open to revel the orange seeds. During the autumn the Spindle can be very showy with red leaves and masses of rosered capsules attractive to birds.
