Thuja plicata Atrovirens, more commonly known as Western Red Cedar is an evergreen conifer with redbrown flaking bark. It has a conical habit and darkgreen, neat foliage that may become bronzetinted in winter. It is slower growing than leylandii and makes a very good hedge although it can still grow up to 60cm (2 ft) per year. The foliage is slightly scented particularly when crushed. Plant in moist, freedraining soil in any aspect. Needs protection from drying winds, particularly when young. This conifer makes an extremely good hedge. It will reach a height of 20m and a spread of 15m once mature. Contact with skin may cause irritation.
