This rare fruit was introduced to England in 1844 and became a favourite of Queen Victoria. Ugni molinae is a highly decorative plant grown for its foliage, flowers and berries. This densely foliaged, slow growing, evergreen shrub produces glossy green, aromatic leaves, in spring masses of bell-shaped white or pink flowers appear, which are followed by bright red edible berries, which can be used in pies and jams.
