Preferred common name: White Willow Other common names: Huntingdon willow, swallowtailed willow Our Royal Horticultural Society White Willow ( Salix alba ) hedges are fastgrowing deciduous native hedges with narrow silverbacked leaves. The name derives from the white tone to the undersides of the leaves. The hedge can shimmer in the wind providing movement and colour to a garden. It is fast growing (up to 2 ft per year). The bark is greybrown and deeply fissured in older hedges. The leaves are superb; paler than most other willows, due to a covering of very fine silky white hairs, particularly on the underside. The flowers are produced in catkins in early spring, and pollinated by insects.
