It is a fast growing, deciduous native plant with shiny leaves, producing a purple haze with yellow catkins in March and releasing attractive false cones in autumn that can last longer. The leaves are a roundedfan shape, when they first emerge they are a softorange brown colour and later mature to dark green. Trimming the RHS Common Alder (Alnus glutinosa) hedge during JulyAugust helps retain its leaves throughout winter.
