Preferred common name: Common Alder Other common names: Aller, Black alder, The RHS Common Alder (Alnus glutinosa) inherits the Glutinosa in its Latin names from the stickiness of its buds and young leaves. It is a fast growing, deciduous native plant with shiny leaves, producing a purple haze with yellow catkins in March and releasing attractive false cones in autumn that can last longer. The leaves are a roundedfan shape, when they first emerge they are a softorange brown colour and later mature to dark green. Trimming the RHS Common Alder (Alnus glutinosa) hedge during JulyAugust helps retain its leaves throughout winter. It is particularly good in costal positions, but also sun or semi shade and due to its fast growth when young, it can be used to form an effective windbreak to protect other plants. It grows in all conditions of soil, but best in moist or even wet soil and will tolerate prolonged periods of standing in water. The RHS Common Alder (Alnus glutinosa) hedge is wildlife friendly, particularly for caterpillars of butterflies and moths. However its main advantage is that it can thrive near water and in very poor and wet soil.
